Small child - small problem?
Usually, if a child shows more than typical busyness, has trouble focusing and abandons his duties in the middle of doing them it is considered that he is simply naughty. Parents are most often blamed, finding the sources of such a state of affairs in educational errors, the material status of the family and similar factors. Often this is an embarrassing problem that parents do not immediately go for proper help with. This is due to an unwillingness to face the facts that say our child is different, needs attention, problematic. We do not want to stigmatize the toddler, we delay the visit to the specialist, hoping that it is just a transitional phase from which the child will grow out of. As a result, we usually seek help from a doctor when the school intervenes, which is not good for either the child or the parents.
Symptoms of hyperactivity
What we should consider? What we should pay attention to? Hyperactivity, in its extreme form known as ADHD, is recognized as a mental disorder whose origin lies in the genetic code. Environmental factors have a rather marginal effect on the onset of hyperactivity. In the case of the youngest, several characteristic symptoms should be noted, such as difficulty sleeping, unusually high motor activity, repetition of activities despite previous negative experiences, lack of appetite, and speech development disorders. In the case of school-aged children, there is also a problem with concentration (failure to remember instructions) and reduced behavioral control making it difficult to interact with peers. A hyperactive child also often has problems with internalization, which manifests itself, among other things, by running a narrative aloud about his own actions.
Treatment of hyperactivity
However, it is not that we can't do anything to support our child. First of all, psychotherapy classes are very helpful. In extreme cases, drug therapy is also necessary. Can we do more? Are there any actions we can take ourselves?
First of all, a child with hyperactivity needs a sense of security and safety - under such conditions, he has a chance to achieve maximum concentration. Doing the same things on a regular basis also helps the child develop a framework of consistency that helps him achieve the right grades at school. The parent should absolutely participate in the descendant's homework assignments. You should also formulate the tasks to be performed in a simple way and divide more complex requests into smaller parts - this allows you to focus on single activities and reduces the feeling of boredom. Each step of the task should be consistently checked by the parent.
Toys for a hyperactive child
In addition to school duties, it is also important to have fun. Due to its special characteristics, a child with ADHD symptoms must be provided with the right kind of toys. It is also important that their number is rather limited, so that the child can concentrate on the activities being performed, rather than looking for new stimuli. The best in such cases are toys whose level of difficulty is adapted to the child's age. In this role, for example, the following will be ideal building blocks at the arrangement of which a child may be helped by a peer or an adult. Not only will they help to practice concentration on an activity, but also the toddler, subjected to socialization, can become accustomed to other children, learning social behavior. Creating complex constructions allows you to control your emotions, but also facilitates concentration (let's make sure that the time of play falls on a rather quiet time of the day) and expands the imagination.
As for the exact treatment plan, it must be discussed and implemented by a medical specialist.
Symptoms of hyperactivity usually disappear with age. After reaching adulthood, only about 2% of the population continues to show symptoms of ADHD. So it's worth addressing this problem as early as possible and helping our child cope with adversity.
